A candlelight vigil drew a crowed to San Pedro late Monday, Sept. 21, to honor the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, who died on Friday, Sept. 18, at the age of 87.

Ginsberg, or “RBG” as she became popularly known later in life, was considered the leader of the liberal justices on the nation’s high court and had become something of a cult hero on the left.

The 6 p.m. observance was sponsored by the San Pedro Democratic Cub and other Harbor Area groups.

Speakers included Temple Beth-El Rabbi Cassi Kail and Cantor Ilan Davidson (who performed “Justice, Justice” by Doug Colter); Elder Eric Beck, moderator of the Presbytery of the Pacific, Presbyterian Church (USA); Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn; Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell; and Los Angeles City Councilmember Joe Buscaino, among others.

The gathering was held at the historic site of Liberty Hill, on Fifth Street and Harbor Boulevard, where writer Upton Sinclair spoke to some 3,000 striking longshoremen on May 15, 1923.
